Recent professional experience

2008 established website majoritycoalition.ca as part of the campaign for a progressive majority coalition government for Canada.

2007 established website greenpolitics.ca a grassroots view of green politics from a BC and Canadian perspective.

2004/7 freelance research, writing, editing, web content and strategic communications consulting in Victoria, BC.

2002/3 production layout artist for The Driftwood weekly newspaper, Saltspring Island, BC designing ads and laying out five-page classified advertising section.

1999-00 auxiliary employee of BC government in policy & legislation section of the consumer taxation branch, ministry of Finance, Victoria, BC – general communications functions, information database and web site management.

1996-99 writing, editing, Internet publishing and training in Nelson, BC including establishing Kootenay Internet Communications Society (KICS) to receive federal grant to set up Nelson area public Internet access and training. Also started Kootenay Co-op Radio community radio station.

1995-96 established IPS Internet Publishing Systems in Vancouver, BC an independent company offering Web site design and construction, and Internet information systems consultation and management to clients.

1994-95 authored Point & Click Internet Connection Kit for Windows© and Macintosh©, two book/disk combinations containing software and instructions for connecting a personal computer to the Internet. Published by Reed Canada.

1994-95 publishing director of Highwire Information Inc. based in Vancouver, BC and Toronto, Ontario. Prepared online publishing proposals and designed, set up and managed web publishing sites.

1993-94 director of Internet publishing for Wimsey Information Services Inc. of Burnaby, BC. Responsible for launch, marketing, installation and support for the fastest-growing Internet dialup company in British Columbia. Set up Canada's first commercial Web publishing site at Wimsey.

1989 contract technical writer with SystemHouse Limited in Vancouver, BC responsible for end-user documentation for large data communications software project.

A little earlier

1984-89 freelance writing and editing work appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Globe and Mail Report On Business, Edmonton Magazine, Canadian Business and The Edmonton Journal, as well as radio work for CBC Radio Edmonton.

1981-84 freelance editor/designer producing two magazines for the Government of Alberta: Alberta Transportation and Small Business Quarterly magazines, both full-color publications reaching a wide audience.

1980-81 freelance business and technical journalist writing on aspects of Alberta's oil and gas industry. Articles appeared in The Financial Post, Canadian Business, Business Life, Skyword, and others.

1980-81 editor of Alberta Inc. magazine, directed at the provincial businessman.

1977-80 editor of Alberta Motorist magazine, responsible for entire operation of large-circulation (220,000), full-color, web offset, general-interest publication. Staff of five people; annual budget over $300,000; extensive use of freelance writers, photographers and artists.

1970-76 associate editor of Elements of Technology, magazine for technical and vocational teachers in Canadian high schools and community colleges. Responsible for conception, research, writing and design of eight-page projects section.

1969-76 freelance writer in Toronto, researching and writing articles, brochures and other assorted materials for regional publications and commercial clients.
