This is a footnote

In hypertext, a footnote doesn't have to be at the bottom of a page. This "footnote" is actually a separate hypertext file, but it works just like a footnote in a book.

A footnote differs from a reference in that:

a footnote is generally shorter than a reference

it is generally written by the same author, and

it is located on the same Web server as the text it explains.
