This Is A Reference

A reference is an entirely separate article or multimedia file than the article that refers to it. It may be located on the same server as the reference article, but it also can exist on another computer, anywhere on the Internet.

A reference differs from a footnote in that:

it is generally longer than a footnote
it may not be written by the same author
it may not be stored on the same Web server.
