Graphics File Formats

Several file formats are common for Internet graphics. These are:

[green bullet]>
.gif -- Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), developed by Unisys and
Compuserve, the most common Web graphics format. A GIF viewer is Netscape and NCSA Mosaic. In most cases, use GIF images.

[green bullet]>
.jpg or .jpeg -- Joint Panel of Experts on Graphics (JPEG) file
compression standard, more compression than GIF and is supported directly by
some graphical Web browsers, including Netscape and the latest version
	of Mosaic.

<IMG SRC=Adobe Photoshop, which can open and save a file in many graphic formats, or by downloading them from the Internet. You can also find GIFs and JPEGs in clip art collections.

A conversion program, such as the commercial DeBabelizer for the Macintosh, or the shareware GIFConverter, which is available both for Windows and the Mac, will convert images between formats. Photoshop is also useful in this role.
